Developed by Hotta Studios and published by Perfect World, Tower of Fantasy is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). It was first released in China in December 2021 and generated nearly 80 million USD in turnover in its first month after release.
Tower of Fantasy is often compared to Chinese developer miHoYo’s Genshin Impact, also an MMORPG, which became a huge commercial success worldwide and generated more than 2.3 billion USD of revenue in its first year.
The two games are considered potential rivals. Both titles are free to play; however, monetization happens via a gacha system, which allows players to buy additional skins, weapons, or other items.
Fans laud the games’ strong emphasis on character design and high-fidelity visuals, even on mobile.
The main difference between Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy is the setting. The former unfolds in a world resembling a magical version of the Middle Ages, whereas the latter is staged in the far distant future.
In Tower of Fantasy, humankind, or what is left of it, flees to a planet called Aida after Earth’s resources run dry.
However, Aida is also affected by a cataclysm partly caused by a mysterious substance called Omnium. Thus, players must begin their journey in post-apocalyptic Aida.
Netizens from different countries expressed their enthusiasm about the global release of Tower of Fantasy on Twitter.
“You guys need some serious good influence in India, please capture this market where Genshin Impact is still not that popular yet,” expressed one netizen.
“Spanish speakers are tired of only playing Genshin,” bemoaned another.
